Genealogy Research at GCGS
The Gladwin County Genealogical Society strives to locate and preserve historical genealogical materials for the public and for researchers. We are the proud caretakers of research materials that not only feature Gladwin County but also include items from throughout Michigan and the USA. There are also resources pertaining to many other countries and we specifically attempt to collect materials pertaining to areas from which the majority of our Gladwin County residents originated.
The Gladwin County District Library provides us with our research area, the Else M. Kelly Research Rooms, consisting of two adjoining rooms and a storage area. The research rooms have six computers for use by patrons with free access to Ancestry (including all of their U.S. and International records), Newspapers.com Publisher Extra, Fold3 (military records), MyHeritage and digital copies of most issues of the Gladwin County Record from 1877 to 2023. We are also a FamilySearch Affiliate Library. This provides several million additional records which are not available from the home editions of FamilySearch. In addition, the area houses our genealogy library which is referenced above.
Hours
Current hours are:
- Tuesdays, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
- Thursdays, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
- Fridays, 10 a.m. - noon
- Other times by appointment
Be sure to check the schedule AND call ahead before coming in. If you don't get an answer on the genealogy phone, (989)347-1003, call the library at (989)426-8221 to ask if folks are working in the genealogy room. If you are unable to come in, contact us via email.
We are not open if the library is closed for any reason or if schools are closed due to inclement weather.
Donations
The Gladwin County Genealogical Society, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) corporation which means that donations to us may be claimed as a charitable contribution on your income tax return. Thus, any donated amount in excess of the membership fee is tax deductible.
GCGS Meetings
Business meetings are held on the 2nd Monday of each month at 10 a.m. except there are no meetings in July and August. The October meeting is held on the 1st Monday since the library is closed on Columbus Day for inservice.
Research Requests
- $15 per hour if we do research for you (minimum of 2 hours).
- If we assist you while your learn: free
- Copies of obituaries and news items emailed to you: $5 for the first 4 items and $1 for each additional item.
- Printing costs: B/W 20 cents per side; Color 75 cents per side. Members are charged half price.
